Florida colleges and universities performed more than $1.6 billion (2007) in sponsored research, working closely with business and industry to create cutting-edge technologies. Their work has generated nearly $528.8 million in royalties to the state since 2000. In Fiscal Year 2007 alone, Florida's universities received 171 patents and over $53.6 million in revenues from license agreements. Much of that activity has resulted in the formation and/or growth of numerous companies of various sizes--from startups to large companies--across the state. Moreover, Florida universities are highly regarded as some of the best in the country in technology transfer.
